In a week where we have lost one of the most charismatic heroes of social justice we are reminded once more of the importance to stand up and take notice of the inequalities that are still so prevalent in the world in which we live. It is our belief that the fashion choices we make can have a genuinely positive impact on both humanity and our environment. That is why we are so passionate about making Gather&See a reality.
The fashion industry is a TRILLION dollar industry. We spend so much time and money on the way we look. Should it not make sense then, that we think about where our clothing has come from, who has made it and how? The clothing industry is notoriously hard to regulate – many of the brands we know and love, the pieces which you are probably wearing now have been crafted by young men and women, working unregulated hours and rarely earning a living wage. Gather&See brings together brands that offer an alternative way of dressing, without compromising on style.
Many brands such as NearFar, Osei Duro, Lalesso or Salone Style provide fair payment, education and empowerment to young women, the very same demographic that is so frequently let down by the fashion industry. It is high time that the fashion consumer starts to question the provenance of their clothes and realise the impact that their choices can make, both positive and negative.
In the words of that great light in the world that has gone out, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
