It's holiday month! Things maybe slowing down as so many of us head away for a week or two and the kids are out of school for the summer but there is heaps going on this month to get your teeth stuck into. Not only that the heatwave looks set to continue offering more balmy days to enjoy the amazing produce that August has to offer. So top yourself up with a nice glass of rose and check out our top tips of what to do this month.
Enjoy the British Seaside
It's the warmest summer we've had for years (which is worrying in terms of climate change but that's for another post), so make the most of it by visiting the great British seaside. Pack up a picnic, grab some towels and an umbrella and enjoy an obligatory ice cream. Sometimes we forget we live on an island - a beach is never that far a way. Some of our faves include the North Norfolk coast, the Welsh coast and the gorgeous little coves of far Cornwall. Who needs the French Riviera when you have all of that on your doorstep?
Read Lucy Siegle's New Book
If you do head to the beach then you'll want a good book and we can't think of a more appropriate one than Lucy Siegle's "Turning the Tide on Plastic". Journalist, broadcaster and eco lifestyle expert Lucy provides a powerful call to arms to end the plastic pandemic along with the tools we need to make decisive change. It is a clear-eyed, authoritative and accessible guide to help us to take decisive and effective personal action. Without big action, at the current rate, pieces of plastic will outnumber fish in the ocean by 2050 - a horrifying fact - so make this book be the start of your own personal action.
Notting Hill Carnival
The music, the costumes, the food.. Notting Hill Carnival is always a highlight of summer in London. Evocative, buzzing and a real experience for all the senses, this summer's festival is sure to be as colourful as ever. Dress in your finest festival gear and head down to West London to see what all of the fuss is about. Let's hope the heatwave holds out!
What to Eat...
So many delicious things in season in August - we barely know where to start! First off nectarines and peaches - big and juicy for breakfast, lunch and dinner - we'll chop them up with our cereal, pop them into our salad and bake them in cakes. Perfection. The barbeque is still going strong and there is nothing we like more than a good old corn on the cob grilled al fresco and slathered in butter. Something about eating with your hands is always a pleasure. Talking of which artichokes are also now available in abundance - those little leaves dipped in butter is a unique summer pleasure.
What to Wear...
First up - swimwear. For your summer holiday, your trip to the coast and, in this weather, in your own back garden. If you haven't already discovered the fabulous STIDSTON, we recommend you check them out right away for gorgeous one pieces and bikinis many of which can be worn as day wear as well as for a dip. We especially love the new Gingham pieces which have just landed. Secondly, it would be rude not to mention the G&S sale. There's still time to grab yourself a bargain but stock is limited and disappearing fast - don't say we didn't warn you!
