Swimwear Special - How to Nail Poolside Chic

Swimwear and I have a bit of a love hate relationship. The initial pang of excitement in pulling out a bikini that reminds me of great holidays and literally smells of summer quite quickly subsides to a feeling of panic about wearing the thing. A bikini requires us to show off parts of our bodies that are, for the rest of the year, hidden away and forgotten about.  Every year I have good intentions of getting in shape ahead of time and every year being  gymphobic I fail at the first hurdle.

Every year I find myself night before said holiday smearing fake tan over me hoping to cover up many a sin, not to mention my bottle white skin.  On arrival in paradise, things don’t tend to get much better - invariably I settle myself by the pool feeling good, only to find a Giselle look alike glamazon rocks up on the next sun lounger -  bronzed and toned to perfection and splashing around in a minute triangle that wouldn’t cover my little finger! I don’t think I am the only one - a recent survey showed that over 30% of women actually avoid wearing swimwear in public. I blame the media and the constant portrayal unrealistic image of a perfect photoshopped woman that has somehow become the meaning of beauty - but that is another story and another rant!

Back to the subject and the point I am trying to get to - our swimwear choices are important!  Choosing a colour, shape and style that suits you and that you feel good in can make all the difference.  Slim with a small bust? Then go for a strapless bandeau style like Mallory Curlee’s bandeau bikini.  Short and sweet at 5 ft 2? Then a tanga bottom, or tie sided bottom will lengthen your legs (Lalesso Pembe Tatu bikini).  Hate your tummy, then why not go for a cute one piece that shows off just enough to still be youthful  like Lalesso’s Kuzama swimsuit.  But I also think that swimwear is something to have a bit of fun with - choose a colour that you might not usually dare. I love Curlee’s Twist Halter One Piece for its practicality (great support for a larger bust) and bright coral tone. A bold pattern (see Curlee Bikini’s Gathered Halter Classic One Piece) draws attention away from other areas you want to camouflage.

The piece de la resistance has to be Curlee’s Fashion Wrap Monkini - slashed to the belly button with a glamorous extra long halter straps that can be wrapped in anyway you like - this is the piece to wear to a beach club where you want to make an impact, throw a long flowing skirt on and you have an evening look ready made!

The last piece of advice, is to accessorise.  Don’t leave home without a beach bag, some great shades and some cool cover ups as well as fun jewellery.  No one (not even our friend Giselle) looks good eating in a bikini so an elegant beach dress is an absolute must even if it is just thrown on for the little trip to the resto for a goats cheese salad and a glass of rose. And on that note, with weather this fine I am off to create my own little slice of the Cote d’Azure in my back garden.  Well, it would be rude not to. Bon Voyage!
