We love to travel at Gather&See and are always keen to bring you the story of destinations that inspire us and relate to the Gather&See ethos. Limalimo Lodge in Ethiopia is a great example. Read on to find out all about this awe-inspiring place!
Are you looking for an unusual and adventurous holiday but – as a city-girl at heart – still want to be sure of a warm welcome and a cosy bed when the day’s adventuring ends? Let us introduce you to the recently opened Limalimo eco-lodge in northern Ethiopia’s Simien Mountains National Park. The lodge is in the heart of trekking country, and offers a completely unique, natural experience. Only two hours from the airport – but somehow a world away from anywhere – the lodge is defined by three things: the concept, the community, and the landscape. There are few places in the world that have impressed the seasoned G&S travelers in the same way.
OK we’ll admit, we do have a connection to Ethiopia that drew G&S back: co-founder Steph spent over a decade growing up here as a child. Part of the passion for global, sustainable fashion that led to our launch was born in Ethiopia, and a return visit was always going to be true to that heritage.
So first let’s start with the concept. Every inch of the design, construction and function of the lodge is wedded to environmental and sustainability principles. It’s made almost entirely of rammed earth and eucalyptus wood with locally produced finishes. The water is solar heated and even the mains electricity is hydro-powered.

Secondly the community, or more importantly Limalimo’s relationship with it. Almost everything is sourced from the surroundings, from the earth walls to the plum jam at breakfast. Co-founder Shif and his team grew up in these mountains, and the lodge is even working with farmers to ensure all their produce is locally sourced, with minimal food miles.
The rooms are simple: barely treated wood and rammed earth beds (with mattresses, of course), Ethiopian cotton bedding and locally made soaps, offer no distractions from the view and ensure the perfect eco-luxury escape.

Lastly, the landscape. The simple, clean elegant style of this hideaway blends seamlessly into the mountain surroundings which are, quite simply, breathtaking. Be it breakfast on the veranda at sunrise – or yoga if you’re keen – or sunset around the fire, you are captivated by the landscape. Nowhere else in the world has G&S ever found such calm!
Overnight flights with Ethiopian Airlines offer domestic connections to Gondar Airport via Addis Ababa International Airport, meaning that you can be soaking up the view with a glass of white by lunchtime. A few hours’ or a few days’ community trekking with local guides can be organized through the lodge, and they can advise you on tour companies for longer adventures. An all inclusive double room at Limalimo is between $200 and $300 per night. Keep an eye out for yoga and running weeks organized by the lodge throughout the year.
