This month's Gather&See Girl is the wonderful Penny Lane from our go to online fashion magazine - The Style Lane. Full of brilliant fashion content that we can't get enough of, we were really excited to put some questions to this super talented editor. Read all about Penny's work and inspiration as well as her style tips right here.
We are big fans of The Style Lane, how did the blog come about and who is it aimed at?
Thank you! Whilst freelancing for different print and online publications, I realised that with each submission, I wanted a platform to channel and showcase the content. An online magazine for busy, stylish and career focused women, covering all things fashion, beauty and lifestyle answered my creativity prayers.
Running such a successful blog must be quite full on - how do you manage to keep on top of everything and maintain a good work life balance?
It’s definitely a tricky balance to maintain and is often something that I fail miserably at. It’s too easy to catch up on emails late at night. Plus, with the wonderful world of social media that never stops spinning, it’s practically impossible to completely switch off. When I do succeed in grabbing some downtime, the only way I can enjoy it guilt-free is with a whole lot of prior planning. If I’m organised, I’m calm.
Is there anything exciting coming up on The Style Lane you would like to share with us?
I’m hoping to extend the shop section with exclusive, yet purse-friendly items. Watch this space.
What are your tips for aspiring style bloggers?
Make sure you can realistically allocate enough time to making it everything you want and imagine it to be. If you’re flat out with work and other commitments, it may become a chore and that’s where the fun stops. Dedicate set days or hours throughout the week to working on your images, content, marketing and social media.
What or who inspires you in your work?
I love reading and hearing the stories behind successful women. Garance Doré, Jenna Lyons, Aimee Song, Sophia Amoruso – they’re all killing it. Blog wise, I adore The Frugality by Alex Stedman and We Are Twinset.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever been given?
Everyone starts out as a beginner.
What makes you angry?
Body-shaming and bad manners.
What makes you happy?
Kindness, positivity and walks with my pup, Archie.
What is your favourite restaurant?
I recently visited The Ivy Chelsea Garden and it was serious brunch goals.
Where's your go to place to relax?
Where is on your travel hit list for 2016?
Mykynos for sunshine after London Fashion Week.
Which city in the world would you love to live in for just 1 year?
New York would be amazing for an intense year. I’m not sure I could keep up with the pace for longer than that. I fell for San Francisco a few years ago on holiday and would love to live there for a while, too.
What is your personal style?
A lot of monochrome and denim. I choose good basics and work the rest around those. Current obsessions include mules, dusty pink and tons of earrings.
Who is your fashion hero / style icon?
Miroslava Duma for major outfit inspiration.
Which item of clothing do you most treasure?
A Moschino top that shimmers in the light like a mermaid.
What is your 'can't live without' beauty product?
I rave about Pommade Divine everyday. It’s an ancient balm that can be used on everything from nails and dry patches, to bites and split ends.
Why is shopping ethically important to you?
As much as I love fast moving trends, throwaway fashion irritates me. Invest wisely and cherish key pieces. Choose to support brands and designers who do not exploit and practice a fair production process.
Your top 3 pieces on the G&S website at the moment?
Hiro + Wolf Brass Arrow Ring, Veryan White Dress, Carla Colour Lind Sunglasses.
