I am not sporty. My hand eye coordination is shoddy, I can’t run, definitely can’t catch and I don’t like hitting things. Sports tournaments at school were of particular amusement to my friends who found it funny to watch me swim at a snails pace with a full length still to go long after my opponents were out and dried off. They also used to enjoy making me goalie at hockey matches, knowing full well I would have an England prodigy flicking goals in at me at a rate of knots. It wasn’t a pretty sight!
Whilst everyone else was rocking the latest Nike Air Max trainers I was in slip on plimsols until I was about 14 when I graduated to a trusty Green Flash (that might explain the poor running style!). To this day I still only have one pair of trainers that rarely see daylight.
Bearing this in mind two things are odd – one that I am marrying a professional sportsman who is constantly bemused at my lack of skill – and secondly that I find myself oddly drawn to the glamorous, yet casual form of apparel we like to call Sports Luxe.
There is something about the clean lines, unusual fabrics and paired down styling that I find refreshing. At Gather&See this season we have a number of pieces that fit into this look perfectly. Catalonian brand CUS uses recycled PET to create beautifully soft and cool pieces with sporty details such as little mesh cap sleeves raw edging. Anne Gorke’s little leather bomber is possibly the chicest incarnation I have ever seen of a retro American baseball jacket and Kowtow’s organic cotton range is full of perfectly cut basics - the vest top is a wardrobe staple that goes with everything, the overized check tunic with its over sized sleeves and simple round neck is one of those easy pieces you thrown on and that generates instant praise.
On top of the shapes and fabrics are the basic colours of sportswear – primary of which has to be white. With Wimbledon upon us we can’t think of a more perfect time to get out your tennis whites – Kowtow’s surface to air shirt and Veryan’s super soft Box T being our go to white items. Simply pair with our very best Nobody jeans and gorgeous Ten&Co lace ups (a million miles away from my old plimsols!) and there you have a softened version of the Sports Luxe look. Great if like me you are a spectator more than a player!
