If you follow our social media channels you'll probably know that there aren't one but two pregnancies going on in the Gather&See team right now! Both founders Steph and Alicia are pregnant with their second babies. So we thought what better time to talk about ethical maternity wear...
Dressing a bump takes some thought, especially if you plan to do it sustainably and without buying into fast fashion maternity-wear that is commonly available. But with some smart thinking you can pick some great buys that will take you right through your pregnancy, breastfeeding and beyond. Because being a Mum doesn't mean you can't be stylish (even if you might be a little dishevelled now and then - oh sleep deprivation we haven't missed you!). Here are our Top Sustainable Maternity Wear Picks:
1. Arela Trousers
A comfortable pair of trousers is an absolute must. Hoiking up skinny maternity jeans every 2 minutes is one of our pregnancy bugbears. Instead we recommend choosing an elasticated waist in a size up. Arela's super soft cotton Hadley and Ranui trousers are top picks - so comfortable but have a luxurious feel to them. Great for post partum too!
2. Chaleca Knitwear
Pregnancy in winter calls for some cosy knitwear that won't make you feel frumpy but will cocoon you and your bump without irritating your skin. We just love Chaleca's collection of Alpaca pieces that will do exactly that. The fit is loose, leaving plenty of room for growth...
3. A Silk Shirt
Without wishing to sound like some 1950s guide for housewives, a good blouse is a smart investment for any Mum-to-be. If you can go for silk (we love Kemp Gadegaard's Stroke shirt) it will feel like a little indulgence - so few of these in pregnancy - and a loose shape will always look chic - whether you are 2 months or 8 months pregnant. We also love Vildnis's print shirts which are made from recycled plastic bottles -not that you'd know it with the super soft chiffon like feel. Once your baby has arrived these will come into their own with easy access for breast feeding.
4. Kowtow Contemporary Shirt Dress
We can't sing the praises of this jacket enough! Made from 100% organic cotton heavy weight denim, you can wear it as a dress up until about 5 months, then loose as a jacket until birth, and then its also great for breastfeeding with the button down front. Just a great investment piece you'll get so much wear out of pre and post baba.
5. Satva Leggings
Leggings are great for maternity wear even if - like us - you don't actually do any exercise in them! They are super comfortable and look great just with a loose T and some Veja's for a casual look. Satva's reycled polyester printed styles are fun (be sure to take 2 sizes up for maternity as they come up small!) whilst the shorter organic cotton capri's are super soft.
A big scarf will keep you cosy and warm throughout the winter but also makes for a brilliant cover up for when you are breastfeeding. We can't think of anything more lovely than cosying up in Thread Tales Co's cashmere ombre scarf with a new born. Heaven.
7. Kind Pendant
A little something to treat yourself with for all of the blood, sweat, tears - we've said it before - motherhood is the biggest challenge but with the greatest reward imagineable. Kind's beautiful hand made pendants in solid gold or silver lend themselves perfectly to engraving with your little one's names or initials. Just email us with what engraving you would like. Get one of these on your Christmas list now!!
Last but not least. Comfortable footwear that still looks cool! You just can't go wrong with a pair of Vejas. We love the new gold versions to cheer up our mood and add a little something extra to your outfit. A Mum essential!
