The August Issue 2019

Gorgeous August. A long slow month, time to enjoy the warmer weather, spend time with the kids and, if you are lucky, maybe get a holiday in there somewhere. Everything slows down a bit which is something to relish so we'll be taking time to focus on the simple things to do, see eat and wear this month.

Enjoy the British seaside...

August is a great time to load up and head to your nearest beach. Based in the middle of the country, the nearest one for us is still a good 3-hour drive, but oh so worth it as soon as you set foot on the sand and get your first breath of sea air. Go old school and bring a kite for the kids, a good old fashioned picnic and let the waves wash away your stresses. Favourites of ours include North Norfolk - Holkham and Brancaster for long beaches and sandy dunes and Watergate Bay in Cornwall for some surf action.

Take the train...

We are trying to travel by train as much as possible and have been inspired by @DariaDaria's European train travels. (Though the night train has so far proven a bit too much for us with babies in tow!) If you don't follow her already, we strongly recommend her account for inspiration on sustainable travel. This August we'll be enjoying train travel here in the UK and over in France. Slowing it down and enjoying watching the countryside change, it becomes part of the holiday itself.

Open Air Theatre and Cinema...

Make the most of warmer evenings and get outside. There is something so romantic about packing up a picnic and watching a production or even just a film outside. Regents Park is a classic but you can find different outdoor offerings all over the country. A classic British summer outing. Don't forget the bubbles and strawberries..

What to Eat..

Tomatoes... we've been growing our own for the first time this year and can't wait for the crop to ripen. Homegrown tomatoes are hard to beat - we'll be putting them in everything - simple salads with olive oil and herbs, and making our own pasta sauces, which the kids love. It is also blackberry time!! We've been watching them start to appear on the hedgerows and can't wait to get picking - plenty of yummy recipes for jams and sweet treats with the little black gems!

What to Wear..

Sticking with this month's theme, August is about slow, thoughtful living - and Veryan's beautiful collection fits in perfectly with that. Each piece is handmade by Veryan in her London studio to order. She sources the fabrics with the greatest of care and her attention to detail and precision of cut is second to none. Couture might be out of reach, but we have to say a made to order piece from Veryan seems pretty darn special to us.
